New data from the Mexican government has shown that Mexico’s travel hotspot Quintana Roo remains a top tourist destination, with nearly two million visitors expected during the 2023 summer travel period.
According to Riviera Maya News, Secretary of State for Tourism Bernardo Cueto Riestra revealed that projections suggest around 1.8 million tourists will generate $1.7 billion in revenue for Quintana Roo this summer.
Riestra said the tourism estimates are 4.4% higher than last year and are the result of the state government’s promotion to “ensure that more visitors reach the state’s destinations.”
Data showed Quintana Roo destinations all saw growth compared to 2022, but Bacalar tops the list with an increase of almost 20% expected this summer.
Regarding the archaeological areas of the Mexican state, Riestra announced that the number of tourists increased by 32.2% compared to the same period last year.
“This demonstrates the appeal of our beautiful state and the preference of visitors to explore its natural wonders, in addition to archaeological areas,” Riestra told Riviera Maya News.
Earlier this month, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) revealed that foreign tourist arrivals in Mexico rose 9.3% in May to 3.3 million, a jump of more than 276,000 from the same month in 2022.
